Baptism

John 1:19-34

1.  John was called of God to baptize, John 1:33

    a. John’s message was proclaimed by baptism

    b. a baptism of repentance using water, Matthew 3:11

    c. that Jesus might be revealed, John 1:31

    d. it’s all about Jesus

3. What is baptism

   a. to dip or immerse

   b. to be totally surrounded or occupied by

2. John’s baptism was one of repentance, Mark 1:4

   a. repentance is a turning away from

   b. he preached baptism of repentance for the remission of sin

   c. not the baptism of water for the remission of sin

3. Paul was baptized to show his faith is Jesus Acts 22:16

   a. salvation, cleansing of sin comes from faith in the name of Jesus- Romans 10:9-10,13

   b. to be immersed in water is to publicly proclaim your faith in Jesus

 4. John message was incomplete Acts 19:1-7

    a. he spoke of one to come, not yet here

    b. he was saying be immersed in repentance-totally turn away from sin

    c. this is the teaching of the Old Testament, to be immersed in right living- Ezekiel 18:21-23

5. What then is the complete message-

  a. it begins with Jesus- It is all about Jesus

  b. our salvation, the cleansing from sin is through faith in Christ, Romans 10:17, II Timothy 3:15

  c. it is faith in the sacrifice of Christ that cleanses our conscience & removes the guilt of sin – Hebrews 9:14, 10:22

  d. by faith in Christ we become sons of God that is as we are immersed into Christ

  e. it is as though we were clothed with Christ

  f.  when we are immersed in the water we are being identified with Christ-death, burial, resurrection

6. if you then be risen with Christ-Matthew 28:18-20

 a. as you go through life teach whoever will listen that their lives may be immersed in Christ and is demonstrated by their immersion or baptism in water

First, where do you stand with Christ?  Now is the time to make sure that your sins are washed away.  Second, if you know Him are you immersed in Him?  Now is the time to make sure. And last, having been baptized in Christ and baptized in water are you able to show others the way, the way of Christ’s love for you.
