Genesis 2:4-25

And God made Man

The work of God is to create. He takes from nothing and by the power of His word He speaks what was not into existence.  God took pleasure in His creation and said it was good.  Chapter one deals with some of the order of creation.  Now we are going to get a little more detail so that we might better understand God.  It has a lot to do with dirt.

1. God separated the dry land from the seas.

    A. there was but one land mass at this time

    B. in the time of Peleg did the continents form Genesis10:25

2. God told the land to produce vegetation Genesis 1:11

   a. God formed the seeds in ground & told ground to produce

   B. water for the plants came from steams and mist, no rain

3. The purpose of dirt is to make things grow, just add water

   A. put anything in the soil w/a little water the soil will try to make it grow, even a dead stick

4. God took dirt and made the animals, & Adam Genesis 1:24

  A. but Adam was different than the animals for in him God breathed the breath of life

  b. God wanted Adam to be in the image of God

  c. God desired to have a spiritual relationship w/Adam

5. There was a garden near Eden that God planted for Adam

  A. in the midst of the garden were the tree of life, tree of knowledge of good and evil

  B. the instruction are simple the garden is yours for food except for one tree

  C. then God said Adam needs a suitable helper

6. Adam was given the job of naming all the animals

  a. God sent beasts of the field, livestock and birds

  b. God made tigers but it’s not a tiger until Adam says tiger

7. God was teaching Adam what it means to be in His image

  a. Creation came by the power of God’s words

  b. when Adam spoke an animal’s name that is what it was

  c. he created names as God had created - by words

  d. God was teaching Adam what he had been given

8.  When we speak forth the word of God, in faith that word accomplishes what God intended

  a. God has already done the creative work we simply speak what He has already done

  b. it isn’t us it’s God but we have to speak in faith

  c. dirt, which has life in it, needs water to activate life our words of faith act like water and activate the life God has placed in His word

  d. nothing will happen if you don’t say it- Romans 10:9&10

  e. it is God that saves not us, our words activate salvation

9. Adam was looking for the helper God said he needed

  A. animals were made from dirt just like Adam

  B. none of the animals were given rule or dominion like Adam

  C. in Verse 20 we find that no suitable helper could be found

10. God put Adam to sleep took a rib from him and made Eve

  A. all living creatures formed from the dirt but Eve was made from the side of Adam

  B. to understand the image of God takes a man and a woman

  C. the image of God is not either or but a composite of 2

11. Marriage helps us understand the image of God

  A. verse 24 is God ordaining marriage

  B. from 1, Adam there became 2 with Eve; in marriage the 2 join back together to become one.

We are made like God.  We are not God nor are we little gods.  We were created in the image of God that we might have fellowship with Him.  He delegated to us certain powers and authority so that we might be like Him.  What we have is all based upon who God is.  As you piece it together you can see that creation, including dirt, shows us how our fellowship with Him is to work.  None of this just happened it has a purpose, which is to draw us into fellowship with God and to bring glory to Him.  It is my prayer that as you will leave here today you will have a better understanding of what it means to be in the image of God. May your words spoken in faith become the water that activates the soil of God’s promises.
