I Corinthians 11:23-34 The Lord’s Supper Jesus was about to face the agony of the cross. There was no doubt in His mind of what was about to happen. In a short time His body would be beaten and torn. Soon His life’s blood would drip from His wounds and then flow from His pierced side. Jesus did not want His disciples to forget what was about to happen. Jesus wants all those who believe upon His name to remember His sacrifice. To make the message clear Jesus revealed to the Apostle Paul what we have written here. 1. The Lord’s Supper/ communion is not about eating a meal 2. Communion is about our union w/Christ a. cup/bread is our participation in the shed blood/ broken body of Christ I Corinthians 10:16-17 3. There is only one body and it belongs to Jesus Ephesians 4:4-6 a. Jesus Christ is not divided I Corinthians 3:1-9 4. Our enemy the devil seeks to destroy us b. devil will lie about communion-too holy or just common 5. it is not up to us to determine who can and who cannot partake a. it is up to me to warn all who about to take of its significance b. examine yourselves as to whether you should or not I John 1:9 6. Who should partake – those who believe on the name of the Lord Jesus and have confessed Him as Lord. a. when you take you are solemnly proclaiming the Lord’s death and our union with Him through that death to ourselves and to others 7. How often should we partake When you decide to partake examine yourself and remember the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus which has already cleansed you. Then partake as one set free. Our closing song is for the you to take that time and reflect on your relationship with Christ. You may want to come to the alter to do that. I urge you to remember the broken body and the shed blood by which you are forgiven. |
